Biographical Note
J. D. (Jacob Ditzler) Craighead (1873-1964), a Colorado rancher, brought his ailing wife to Springer, New Mexico, from Ohio in 1900. In 1905, he started a cattle ranch in La Junta, Colorado, which was the beginning of the Hereford cattle industry in that area.

The collection contains the family, personal, and business papers of cattle rancher J. D. (Jacob Ditzler) Craighead. In addition to the material on the Craighead ranch, there is also information on various irrigation projects, including the Otero Irrigation District. The collection also contains 24 diaries (1931-1959) and 11 account books (1899-1949) along with government documents and maps.
